That is more in line with the industry average of 10%. Ouch! However, by June, it had decided to tighten its belt, substantially cutting its performance hit to just 9%. Malwarebytes had a moment of glory and a touch of dread in the Performance section, which assesses the "average influence of the product on computer speed in daily usage." It was 17% in the "Slower launch of standard software applications" sub-category in May 2023. A metal roof is strong enough to withstand the elements for years, but does not always keep its pristine shine. They are highly susceptible to oxidation or rust buildup. For all its benefits, however, metal roofs do have some drawbacks. Sheet metal roofing panels can be found on homes, warehouses, storage units, detached garages, and much more. Water based products set up hard and inflexible and will eventually flake and peel on top of oil based coatings.A metal roof is a cheap and easily installed covering for buildings of all sizes. The reason is that oil based coatings don't set up completely hard but remain somewhat flexible. You can use oil OVER an water based coating but not the other way around. If you already have an oil base coat like Penetrol, you can only use an oil based product on top of it. It's made for ships and equipment but a friend uses it to coat canvas floorcloths and says it lasts for years in high traffic areas and under tables and chairs. It's pricey ($100/gal?) but incredibly tough. You might also talk to someone at a Sherwin Williams store about SherClear. At the least, you should use several coats of polyurethane. It's prone to lots of impacts and abrasion. INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH POLY A table top, specially a work table or dinning table, is a pretty tough environment. This post is only about preserving the beauty of rust while stabilizing it to make a rusty object useable and not so messy. please don't ask me how to repaint your car or patio furniture. I'm just a guy who, by chatting with an old time paint guy, stumbled onto a way to stabilize and preserve rust without hiding it. But if you don't have rust, you can skip the penetrol and just go straight to the polyurethane. I wrote this about protecting and preserving the rust for it's looks. I've also been getting a lot of questions about clear, un-rusted metal. The polyurethane is a good, stable, long-lasting finish that won't easily wear off. The reason I use the polyurethane top coat(s) is that the Penetrol is a linseed oil product, and as such, is not very hard or durable. So far they look just like the day I finished on all my projects. I've used this method for several years now including on towel bars hung with damp towels everyday and for a countertop under my bathroom sink. Even on the perfectly flat surface it didn't leave brush marks.ģ) I always spray on a mat polyurethane top coat or two for a smooth finish and the finished piece looks completely natural. I just rinsed it off with a hose on saw horses, let it dry in the sun thenĢ) applied the Penetrol with a brush. In the case of the steel vanity tops shown in the intro I left one out in the rain for a week to cover some scratches and wanted to preserve the light layer of rust. For a rusty surface I'll usually clean it real good with water and a soft brush or cloth to get any dirt off. )ġ) I usually wipe down the piece with paint thinner to remove excess dirt and oil but since the product is oil based you don't need to remove every last trace. I chopped it up and added some numbered steps. It yanked the post and sent me a note to mend my ways. "Some of my best vintage is incredibly well-made, no-name pieces from defunct Italian labels," Satenstein says. While both Satenstein and Cenisio have made impressive designer discoveries through their thrifting (Satenstein says she'd choose to save her spring 1999 Chloé hummingbird top from a fire), both suggest not relying too heavily on designer names. "This means that I can narrow down and focus on certain colors, textures, fabrics, or patterns, so I can visually scan the racks and pull something out if it falls into the category of what I'm looking for," she explains. If you're looking to branch out beyond online consignment shopping but tend to get overwhelmed by the thought of walking into a roomful of clothes, Cenisio suggests starting your tour of the best of New York's thrift stores with a few general needs in mind. How has this suit lasted probably three decades, but some things I buy now start to unravel after a few months?" The quality is incredible, and it's pieces like this that blow my mind. The blouse is actually like a corseted tank top, which felt like it was made for me, and it's made in Italy so you know the craftsmanship is on point. "I found a teal three-piece silk pants suit in perfect condition from the '90s. "My favorite finds tend to be more about quality versus a brand," Romina Cenisio, a designer and creative whose work focuses largely on conservation, says. It's also a more environmentally conscious way to shop, since you're not supporting the market for new items. A dopamine kick!" Thrifting pieces as an alternative to buying them new is an easy way to guarantee you'll never wear the same exact dress or shoes as anyone else. "The quality of vintage is always incredible, and I never pay a lot. "I would guess 95 percent of my clothes are thrifted aside from workout clothes and undergarments and a few pants," Liana Satenstein, a writer and the founder of Schmatta Shrink, says. In addition, many thrift stores are nonprofits that rely on donations and donate proceeds to important causes like AIDS research or support for the homeless. Shopping in the city, you might be lucky enough to score vintage Alaïa or Chanel donated by a celebrity, fashion editor, or business executive. The best thrift shops channel the city's energy, whether that be uptown society or downtown trendsetters. New York City is a town particularly well suited to thrifting: Sprinkled throughout the boroughs are scores of shops to browse-both tightly curated and totally unedited. You can't walk into the experience with a single piece in mind, but put in the time, and you may come away with a whole bag of unique items. In comparison to diamonds, coloured gems have an uneven cut.Īny gem’s rarity is the most important aspect in determining its price. Instead, emeralds (and other coloured gems) are cut to retain their weight while preserving the best possible cut. The cut of a diamond contributes to its radiance, whereas the cut of an emerald does not contribute to its radiance. In general, the emerald’s clarity will be the deciding factor for the final price.ĭiamonds and emeralds have various cut standards. In a ring, a 4.5-carat emerald will be less expensive than a 10.0-carat emerald. A diamond with high clarity is more valuable than one with poor clarity. But the quality of the emerald will greatly determine the overall price.ĭespite the size and carat, emeralds have different clarity. While a faceted emerald is rarer than a brilliant-cut diamond, a faceted emerald will have more sparkle. When comparing emerald and diamond prices, the primary differences between the two stones are their color and clarity. Although both gems have many flaws, their color will still influence the final price. Also, a less colorful diamond has a lower value. A more vivid green emerald is more valuable than a drab brown diamond. It affects its price more than a ring made of a cheaper gem. A high-quality emerald will cost more than a ring made of a cheaper alternative. A ring crafted from either of these gemstones will be considerably more expensive than a ring with emeralds. Generally, an emerald that is a pure green emerald will be more expensive than an emerald with any other hues.īoth are a beautiful shade of green, but diamonds tend to be a more expensive stone. Emerald can have secondary colors, like yellow or blue, but it is the bluish green hue that makes it more valuable. The second factor to consider when evaluating the emerald vs diamond pricing is color. Nevertheless, emeralds are rarer than diamonds, and a sparkly emerald is more expensive. This is because the emerald’s inclusions are too minute to be seen with the naked eye. Generally, however, emeralds do not sparkle. It may have a faint fire effect under the right lighting. The emerald versus diamond price comparisons have many factors to consider. When comparing these two stones, it’s important to remember that a ring with a higher-carat emerald is worth more than a ring with a lower-carat emerald. The carat weight of a diamond determines its value. For example, a four-carat emerald will cost more than a 10.0-carat emerald. The carat weight of an emerald is the key factor for determining its price. What Is The Key Factor In Determining The Price ? It’s even worse if the green diamond is shaped like an emerald. Because green diamonds aren’t very common, most people won’t be able to identify the difference just by glancing at them. People are sometimes perplexed by this, especially when it comes to distinguishing between green diamonds and emeralds. Chemicals containing chromium or vanadium are responsible for the emerald green color.īut don’t be fooled some diamonds appear greenish, while others are red. While diamonds come in clear and yellowish color shades, emeralds are mainly green or bluish-green in color. The obvious distinction between emeralds vs. While an emerald is a gemstone, an emerald-cut diamond is a diamond that has been cut into the emerald shape, which is a rectangular shape. The emerald cut is a sort of diamond cut that was originally designed for emeralds (the gemstone), but acquired favor among diamond designers in the 1920s, resulting in emerald-cut diamonds. Sometimes I’d accidentally throw something because there isn’t as much play in those shoulder buttons. I had difficulty with the smaller shoulder buttons on the Joy-Cons, used to pick up barrels and stunned enemies. The controls are tight and jumps are easy to pull off, but I found playing in handheld mode harder than playing with the Pro Controller. If that wasn’t enough to take the edge off the difficulty, Funky Mode also gives you an extra heart for each level, and hearts to replenish your health appear more often during levels. He also needs no help from Diddy, Dixie, or Cranky. Funky’s surfboard also makes him briefly immune to spike damage, and brings the total level of tubularness in the Switch version to a place unheard of on Wii U. Thanks to a surfboard that lets you feather your falls, Funky’s jumps are much more forgiving than even the jumps possible with Diddy’s rocket or Dixie’s ponytail helicopter. With his wrap-around sunglasses, belt-fastened jorts, tank-top, and bandana, he’s the cool uncle who knows a lot about living, and a little about love. It lets you play as either Donkey Kong or the titular Funky Kong, the coolest of all the Kongs. You can’t cheese your way through any of the levels or battles, you just get a few extra chances to correct your mistakes. The precision jumps and timing are still there. I wouldn't recommend taking on some of the harder levels in public if, like me, you’re unable to stifle frustrated sighs even when surrounded by strangers.įunky Mode isn't a mode for babies. The much more accessible Funky Mode is the biggest change to the Tropical Freeze formula, and it’s a welcome one because it makes things easier without feeling like a mode for babies. I did find myself leaning in close during tense boss battles so I could better keep track of everything happening on screen, but portable Donkey Kong is excellent. The excellent animation moves fluidly while docked or in handheld. It gets loud on “Creature Fear” and “For Emma” (the track), which employ electric guitars, drums and brass. The low fidelity of the recordings gives Vernon’s acoustic guitar a natural, full reverb that helps flesh out songs like “Flume” and “Skinny Love.” But there’s more to the album than just Vernon and his acoustic guitar it’s subtle, but you can hear bass, organ and Mellotron knocking around in the background of some tracks. (See also: Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes, whose 2008 self-titled album arguably marked a peak of the movement, alongside “For Emma.”) Still, nothing sounded quite like the album or has sounded like it since. Though Vernon would distance himself from the genre in his subsequent recordings, “For Emma” is heavily indebted to folk music, which was one of the primary styles of the mid-2000s indie scene. With Bon Iver reissuing a limited edition of the album today for its tenth anniversary, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the album’s legacy as an indie classic. Ultimately, Vernon signed with the independent label Jagjaguwar, who gave the album a wide release in February of 2008. The album was passed along through word-of-mouth, catching the ear of music blogs and record labels alike, all of whom heaped praise upon Vernon’s recordings. Months later, Vernon would rechristen himself “Bon Iver” (derived from the French bon hiver, “good winter”) and self-release these demos as “For Emma” in 2007. In his self-imposed exile, Vernon hunted game, watched old episodes of “Northern Exposure” and recorded nine spectral, insular sketches of songs. If you’ve managed to go the last decade without hearing this album’s backstory, in brief: Amidst the dissolution of his band and his relationship, Vernon retreated to his father’s hunting cabin in late 2006, spending three months in the bitter Wisconsin winter. 19 marks ten years since the wide release of “For Emma, Forever Ago,” Vernon’s debut album as Bon Iver. It sure seems like forever ago that Justin Vernon walked into the Wisconsin woods and emerged with an album that would make him the closest thing indie rock has to a household name. |
